Lumentum plans north carolina InP fab

News

New facility will supply AI data centers and expand U.S. photonics manufacturing capacity.

Lumentum Holdings Inc. announced plans to establish a new U.S. manufacturing facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, to produce indium phosphide (InP)-based optical devices used in AI data center infrastructure.

The 240,000-square-foot site, acquired from Qorvo, is currently operational and will be retrofitted to support production of advanced photonic components, including continuous wave (CW) and ultra-high-power (UHP) lasers.

The acquisition includes the transfer of an experienced workforce, which the company said will support a faster ramp in manufacturing capacity.

Lumentum stated that NVIDIA will be among the customers served by the facility, as part of ongoing strategic collaborations related to AI infrastructure.

The site is expected to support additional hyperscale and cloud customers requiring high-performance optical interconnect solutions.

The expansion is part of Lumentum’s broader effort to increase domestic manufacturing capacity and strengthen supply chain resilience for critical photonic components. The facility will utilize 6-inch InP wafers and is scheduled to begin volume production in mid-2028.

The company plans to invest several hundred million dollars into the site over the coming years. The project is expected to preserve and create more than 400 jobs across engineering, manufacturing, operations, and support functions.

State and local officials cited the region’s existing semiconductor workforce and infrastructure as key factors in the site selection.
