Marvell & Mojo Vision launch micro-LED AI interconnects

News

The collaboration aims to develop high-density micro-LED based optical connectivity solutions designed to support the growing bandwidth and efficiency demands of AI data centre infrastructure.

Marvell Technology and Mojo Vision have announced a long-term collaboration to develop a new class of micro-LED-based optical interconnect solutions aimed at next-generation AI data centre infrastructure.

As AI workloads continue to expand rapidly, conventional data centre I/O systems are facing increasing pressure to deliver higher bandwidth, lower latency and improved energy efficiency. While traditional optical transceivers remain critical for data centre connectivity, future architectures are expected to require new approaches to support the scale of AI computing clusters.

Under the agreement, Marvell will combine its high-performance connectivity technologies with Mojo Vision’s micro-LED platform to develop optical interconnect solutions capable of supporting a range of short-reach AI data centre applications.

The companies said the technology has already been under development for more than a year and is designed to support multiple optical interconnect form factors for hyperscale and cloud data centres.

Micro-LED-based optical solutions are emerging as a potential approach to enable high-density optical connectivity. According to Mojo Vision, its massively parallel optical I/O architecture can enable thousands of optical lanes within a very small footprint, delivering significant bandwidth improvements while reducing energy consumption per bit.

The companies also plan to integrate electrical circuitry, micro-LED emitter arrays, photodetectors, multicore fibre bundles and software-defined alignment into a single architecture designed to move terabits of data per millimetre with low power consumption and minimal latency.

Industry analysts say new optical technologies are likely to play an increasingly important role as hyperscale operators seek more efficient ways to connect large arrays of processors and memory within AI clusters.

Through the collaboration, Marvell and Mojo Vision aim to develop scalable connectivity solutions capable of supporting the performance, reliability and manufacturability requirements of future AI data centre networks.
