3SAE launches OctaPod for SiPh alignment

News

New micro-robot aims to remove alignment bottlenecks in silicon photonics test and assembly workflows.

3SAE Technologies has introduced its OctaPod™ system, a micro-robotic alignment platform designed to accelerate test and assembly processes in silicon photonics manufacturing.

The system was developed in collaboration with consulting firm Aikidovation as part of a rapid “skunkworks-style” development programme aimed at addressing key throughput and yield constraints in photonic integrated circuit production.

According to the developers, the OctaPod platform builds on existing alignment technologies to improve speed, robustness and integration across multiple production stages, including wafer probing, chip testing and assembly.

The system is designed to reduce alignment time while maintaining the precision required for high-performance silicon photonics devices.

The companies said alignment remains one of the most significant cost and productivity bottlenecks in silicon photonics manufacturing, with even small improvements in cycle time having a direct impact on overall production economics and device yield.

The OctaPod system is positioned as a compact and automated solution intended to streamline optical alignment steps that are traditionally labour-intensive and time-consuming in photonics production environments.

3SAE said the rapid development cycle enabled live demonstrations of the system at major industry events, highlighting growing demand for automation tools that can support the scaling of silicon photonics from prototype to high-volume manufacturing.
