Marvell buys Polariton to boost optical speeds

News

Acquisition adds plasmonics-based modulation technology to support next-generation 3.2T optical interconnects for AI-driven data centers.

Marvell Technology has acquired Polariton Technologies, a developer of plasmonics-based optical devices, to strengthen its position in next-generation data centre connectivity.

The deal targets rising demand for higher bandwidth driven by artificial intelligence workloads, as the industry moves beyond current 1.6-terabit links toward 3.2T and beyond.

Polariton’s technology focuses on plasmonic modulators, which enable faster data transmission, lower power consumption, and more compact integration than traditional silicon photonics approaches.

By incorporating these capabilities, Marvell aims to enhance performance in coherent and data centre interconnect applications, including emerging ZR and ZR+ optical modules.

The acquisition also brings a team with expertise in plasmonics and silicon photonics, expanding Marvell’s engineering capabilities in advanced optical systems.
