AMS Technologies buys Bay Photonics for PIC packaging

News

Deal strengthens capabilities in photonic device packaging and system integration, targeting a faster path from chip to module.

AMS Technologies AG has acquired Bay Photonics Ltd. to expand its capabilities in photonics packaging and system integration, with a particular focus on photonic integrated circuits (PICs).

Bay Photonics brings expertise in photonic device alignment, fiber coupling and high-precision optical assembly, supporting applications across telecommunications, sensing, quantum technologies and defense.

The company operates from the Electronics and Photonics Innovation Centre in Paignton, UK.

The acquisition enables AMS Technologies to offer a more integrated approach spanning packaged photonic components, photonics modules combining optics, electronics and thermal management, and production-ready subassemblies.

The combined capabilities are aimed at reducing system complexity and accelerating the transition from prototype to industrial deployment.

AMS Technologies said the deal strengthens its role as a bridge between component suppliers and system-level applications, aligning packaging and system design earlier in the development process.

As part of the integration, the company will establish a three-site European platform across Paignton, Hanover and Kraków to support design, engineering and manufacturing.

The move reflects growing demand for localised, resilient photonics supply chains in Europe.

Bay Photonics will continue operating with its existing team and facilities, with no disruption expected for current customers.
