GlobalFoundries expands silicon photonics footprint with InfiniLink acquisition
GlobalFoundries is set to acquire InfiniLink, an Egypt-based startup specialising in advanced optical data connectivity chips, following last week’s acquisition of Taiwan-based Advanced Micro Foundry. These strategic moves strengthen GF’s silicon photonics capabilities, an area poised for rapid growth amid rising datacenter bandwidth demands and energy-efficiency requirements.
Founded in 2022, InfiniLink develops silicon photonics integrated optical transceiver chiplets (iOTCs), including its flagship iOTC-G1 engine optimised for low-power Ethernet and PCIe linear pluggable optical modules. The company has also developed patent-pending photonic modulators and integrated wavelength division multiplexers/demultiplexers, key technologies for high-speed optical interconnects.
GF said the acquisitions accelerate its path to commercialisation for pluggables and co-packaged optics, enhancing bandwidth while reducing energy consumption per bit. The company expects the expanded portfolio to unlock applications in sensing, LiDAR for physical AI, industrial and automotive markets, and emerging quantum systems, leveraging broader packaging and integration toolkits.
With InfiniLink and AMF, GlobalFoundries is positioning itself as a leading silicon photonics foundry, supporting next-generation optical interconnects and the growing demand for energy-efficient, high-bandwidth data transmission.
