Eviden’s JUPITER supercomputer hits exascale

News

Eviden, the Atos Group’s advanced computing brand, has reached a historic milestone with its JUPITER supercomputer, becoming Europe’s first system to surpass one ExaFlop, performing one billion billion calculations per second. Ranked fourth globally and first in Europe on the TOP500, JUPITER also leads in energy efficiency, topping the Green500 among exascale-class systems with 63 GFlops per watt.

Developed by the Jülich Supercomputing Centre in collaboration with EuroHPC JU, JUPITER is powering over 100 projects, including quantum computing simulations and high-resolution Earth-system modelling. Its energy-efficient design uses advanced liquid cooling and optimised software, setting benchmarks for sustainable high-performance computing. The system will also form the core of the JUPITER AI Factory, providing secure access to AI models for researchers, start-ups, and industry.

Editor’s Note

For PIC readers, JUPITER’s milestone highlights the growing role of photonics in high-performance computing. At exascale, traditional copper interconnects face limits in bandwidth, latency, and energy efficiency. Silicon photonics, optical I/O, and co-packaged optics are emerging as solutions to these challenges. Energy-efficient HPC also emphasises the importance of photonic packaging and thermal management, while photonic accelerators and optical neural networks point toward a future where photons increasingly drive large-scale AI and scientific computing.
