GlobalFoundries acquires advanced micro foundry to expand silicon photonics leadership
GlobalFoundries (GF) has acquired Advanced Micro Foundry (AMF), a Singapore-based silicon photonics foundry, marking a major step in GF’s strategy to strengthen its global PIC capabilities. The acquisition positions GF as the largest pure-play silicon photonics foundry by revenue, expanding manufacturing capacity and research and development capabilities across Singapore and the U.S.
AMF’s 200mm manufacturing platform and extensive IP portfolio will support high-speed applications including AI datacenters, long-haul optical communications, LiDAR, sensing, and emerging markets like automotive and quantum computing. GF plans to scale production to 300mm as demand grows and will establish a silicon photonics R&D center of excellence in Singapore, in partnership with A*STAR, to advance next-generation high-speed data transfer technologies.
“Silicon photonics is critical for AI infrastructure and advanced telecom networks,” said Tim Breen, CEO of GF. “This acquisition accelerates our roadmap for pluggable transceivers and co-packaged optics, while expanding photonics into adjacent markets.”
Jagadish CV, CEO of AMF, added, “Joining forces with GF allows us to advance silicon photonics technology for a broader range of markets and customers globally.”
