imec to open new R&D hub in Qatar, boosting silicon photonics and chip design

News

Imec has announced a new regional R&D hub in Qatar, set to open in early 2026 at the Qatar Science and Technology Park. Supported by Invest Qatar and the QRDI Council, the hub will focus on advanced compute architectures, AI-enabling hardware, and next-generation chip design.

A key part of the initiative is the development of process design kits (PDKs) for silicon photonics, 3D ICs, and silicon interposers, expanding resources relevant to the PIC community. The centre will also explore new design workflows using generative AI and support talent development through training programs and academic partnerships.

Imec plans to begin hiring immediately, aiming for 100 employees by 2030. The move strengthens its global footprint and supports the Gulf region’s growing ambitions in semiconductor and photonics innovation.
