Photon Design delivers advanced laser simulation training at JePPIX PIC design course 2025

News

Photon Design Ltd., a global leader in photonic simulation software, delivered specialist laser design and simulation training during the JePPIX “PIC Design Course” 2025, held at Eindhoven University of Technology from 27 October to 7 November. The annual programme equips photonics engineers with practical skills in designing photonic integrated circuits (PICs) on the JePPIX indium phosphide platform, supporting the growing demand for scalable PIC manufacturing.

Participants received hands-on training in designing key photonic components, including amplifiers, lasers, modulators and detectors, while learning PIC layout, simulation, and process design kit (PDK) use for foundry and MPW runs. Photon Design’s session focused on creating a taper laser using a III–V epi substrate on silicon-on-insulator, demonstrating rapid taper design through its FIMMPROP simulator with dynamic step sizing and simple implementation of Bragg gratings and periodic structures.

“Providing training as part of the JePPIX programme was a privilege,” said Alex Edwards, Scientific and Technical Advisor at Photon Design. “Attendees saw how quickly complete taper laser designs could be produced and optimised, and how our PICWave tool supports full active PIC simulation.”

Edwards highlighted the efficiency benefits of FIMMPROP’s EME-based approach, which delivers consistent results regardless of device size and can run simulations locally on a standard laptop. This contrasts with many FDTD tools that increasingly rely on outsourced cloud computing for each simulation run.

The collaboration reinforces JePPIX’s role in strengthening PIC design capabilities across Europe by offering advanced, practical training aligned with industry needs.
