Veeco secures new MBE wins as quantum photonics demand accelerates

News

Veeco Instruments has expanded its global footprint in quantum materials research with new Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) system wins at Denmark’s Sparrow Quantum and South Korea’s Yeungnam University. The selections highlight Veeco’s growing role in enabling next-generation photonic quantum devices, with more than 30 of its MBE platforms now deployed for quantum R&D worldwide.

Sparrow Quantum, known for its work on high-purity quantum dot single-photon sources, has selected the GENxcel R&D MBE system to advance emitters designed for photonic quantum computing and secure quantum communication. Reliable, deterministic single-photon generation is considered a critical building block for integrated photonic quantum chips, and the new system will support material uniformity, low defect densities, and scalability.

Yeungnam University will deploy Veeco’s GEN10 MBE to extend its research in quantum dots and nanoscale structures, contributing to broader efforts to engineer materials suited for quantum photonics and hybrid integrated platforms.

The investments come as quantum computing funding accelerates globally. McKinsey reports that quantum startups received $2 billion in 2024, while public funding commitments surpassed $10 billion in early 2025. With demand rising for high-performance single-photon sources, quantum-grade epitaxial layers, and reliable materials integration, Veeco’s MBE and ALD solutions are increasingly central to advancing scalable photonic quantum technologies.
