MicroVision launches semiconductor unit

News

MicroVision has launched MicroVision Semiconductor to strengthen its in-house ASIC development and mixed-signal design capabilities, supporting next-generation lidar systems and photonic integrated circuit development.

MicroVision has launched MicroVision Semiconductor, a dedicated business focused on expanding the company's in-house semiconductor capabilities for custom ASIC development, mixed-signal integrated circuits and photonic technologies.

Headquartered in Colorado Springs, the new organization is built around the former Black Forest Engineering business, which MicroVision acquired from Luminar.

It will continue serving external semiconductor design customers while supporting the company's internal development of lidar and perception technologies.

According to MicroVision, the team brings more than 30 years of ASIC development experience and has delivered more than 300 custom mixed-signal integrated circuit designs across automotive, industrial, aerospace, defense and commercial markets.

The new business will play a key role in developing next-generation photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for the company's frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) lidar roadmap, while enabling tighter integration between semiconductors, sensors and software.

MicroVision said the expanded in-house capabilities are intended to accelerate product development and support its broader Lidar 2.0 strategy, which focuses on delivering integrated perception systems rather than standalone sensors.

In addition to advancing its own technology portfolio, the company will continue offering semiconductor design services to third-party customers, creating additional revenue opportunities beyond its core lidar business.
