Veeco wins InP laser production order

A global optical technology company has selected Veeco’s LUMINA+ MOCVD system to manufacture indium phosphide lasers, supporting growing demand for AI-driven optical transceivers.

Veeco Instruments has received an order for its LUMINA®+ metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) system from a global optical and photonic technologies company to manufacture indium phosphide (InP) lasers for datacom applications.

The order strengthens adoption of Veeco’s LUMINA+ platform across arsenide and phosphide epitaxy and expands its presence in the rapidly growing InP laser market, which underpins optical transceivers used in AI data centre networks.

The fully automated LUMINA+ system is designed for high-volume production, offering a large As/P batch size, high throughput and low cost per wafer using Veeco’s TurboDisc® technology.

The platform also supports seamless transitions between InP wafer sizes while maintaining high-quality epitaxial growth.

Indium phosphide lasers are a key component in optical transceivers, which convert electrical signals into optical signals for high-speed data transmission.

Demand for these devices is accelerating as hyperscale data centres expand optical interconnects to support AI training and inference workloads.

According to market research firm LightCounting, sales of optical transceivers and related products are expected to reach $39 billion in 2026, a 53% increase from the previous year.

As optical component manufacturers expand InP laser production capacity, Veeco said its LUMINA+ system is positioned to support high-volume epitaxial manufacturing for next-generation optical communications.
