Quintessent raises $40M for AI optics
Quintessent has raised $40 million in Series A funding and begun customer sampling of its quantum-dot DWDM comb laser for AI datacentre optical interconnects.
Quintessent has raised $40 million in an oversubscribed Series A funding round as it moves towards commercialising a single-chip quantum-dot-based DWDM comb laser designed for AI optical interconnects.
The funding round was led by Cycle Capital, with participation from new and existing investors. The company said the investment will support product sampling, reliability qualification, manufacturing scale-up and development of additional optical components.
Quintessent's first product generates eight precisely spaced wavelengths from a single laser and is designed to simplify DWDM optical links by reducing the need for multiple individually controlled lasers and supporting electronics.
The comb laser uses gallium arsenide (GaAs) O-band quantum-dot gain material heterogeneously integrated with silicon photonics.
According to Quintessent, the approach avoids dependence on the capacity-constrained indium phosphide (InP) laser supply chain while enabling wafer-scale manufacturing.
The company said its architecture can reduce the complexity and power consumption of optical connectivity for AI datacentres, with potential to support both higher and lower wavelength counts and additional CWDM bands.
Following demonstrations at OFC 2026, Quintessent has now begun customer sampling, with the technology currently available through an evaluation kit for integration into system test beds.
The company also plans to develop semiconductor optical amplifiers and an optical engine for high-reliability pluggable optical interconnect applications. The developments form part of a broader roadmap targeting optical connectivity components and integrated solutions for next-generation AI infrastructure.
