IQE advances quantum dot lasers
IQE has signed a purchase agreement with Quintessent to supply quantum dot laser (QDL) epitaxy, supporting the transition of the technology towards customer sampling and commercial deployment for AI data-centre optical interconnects.
Under the agreement, IQE will supply 6-inch gallium arsenide (GaAs) epiwafers through its foundry-ready service. The wafers will support Quintessent’s customer sampling activities as its QDL technology moves towards new production introductions.
Quintessent’s quantum dot laser architecture is designed for next-generation AI data-centre infrastructure, targeting optical interconnects with lower power consumption, simplified manufacturing and improved reliability compared with conventional laser technologies.
The agreement builds on a relationship between IQE and Quintessent that spans more than a decade. The companies have been working to transition QDL technology from research and development towards large-scale production and have previously announced plans to establish a large-scale QDL epitaxial wafer supply chain.
For photonic integrated circuit and optical interconnect manufacturers, the move towards customer sampling represents an important step in commercialising quantum dot laser technology.
Scaling the underlying epitaxy process is particularly important as AI data centres drive demand for higher-bandwidth optical connectivity and more power-efficient optical engines.
IQE said its advanced epitaxy and high-volume manufacturing capabilities position it to support the scaling of multiple optical-interconnect technologies. Quintessent is also developing laser and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) technologies for AI data-centre connectivity.
The latest agreement therefore marks a further step from QDL technology development towards production-ready photonic components and broader customer adoption, highlighting the growing importance of scalable compound-semiconductor manufacturing for AI-era optical infrastructure.
