Focus On Fibre With EPIC And Art Photonics GmbH

News

It is somewhat natural for photonic integrators to focus on PIC building blocks and their role enabling new generations of smaller, more efficient and more versatile photonic solutions. But what about the fibre optical cables that play an essential but seemingly ‘work horse' role in photonic systems? Besides carrying signals within datacom/telecom centers, fibre optic cables can also be versatile sensing tools that are part of an expanding universe of photonic enabled devices and systems being utilized in applications from aviation to wind turbines. Join the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) as it hosts a tour of Art Photonics GmbH on 20th April 2021 to learn more.

Art Photonics was founded by Dr. Viacheslav Artyushenko, who began his journey to entrepreneurship in Berlin during a medical technology conference in November of 1989. At the conference he presented his unique mid-IR fibre cables for CO and CO2 lasers in an Academy of Sciences of the USSR trade fair stand. Perhaps the timing was predictive of his future—the conference coincided with the felling of the Berlin Wall in which he participated; that pivotal moment was foundational to the ultimate reunification of Germany. Being part of history helped Dr. Artyushenko decide to create a spin-off of his laboratory at Moscow's General Physics Institute under the auspices of the Joint Soviet-German-American Venture. His work in the early 1990s within this joint venture enabled his founding of Art Photonics GmbH in Berlin in 1998; the company's initial technology was based on its founder's unique extrusion technology of nanocrystalline silver halide fibers for applications in the mid-infrared range: 3-17µm.

Dr. Artyushenko's work converted to the industrial production of polycrystalline PIR fibres used for the assembly of various cables, bundles and probes for process spectroscopy. Today, the Art Photonics portfolio represents the tremendous growth and diversification possible from 22 years of research and product development work that enables their products' coverage of a broad spectral range - from UV at 300nm to 17µm - using 4 types of specialty fibers spun from silica and chalcogenide glass fibers to PIR-fibers and hollow waveguides.

The company's product line continues to grow and today includes not only a broad variety of fibre cables, spectroscopy probes - customized and bundles, as well as very innovative fiber systems and accessories for broad spectra solutions and applications in process-spectroscopy, IR imaging, laser technology and medicine. The goal for the Art Photonics team is to engineer, design and manufacture high quality optical fibre solutions for the chemical, pharma, biotech and food industries as well as medical, space and environmental applications. The most recent recognition of Art Photonics' wide-ranging product line came in 2020 when it was honored as a recipient of a German Business Award, which recognized the company as a Global Leader in Mid-IR Fibre Optics.
