Sydney Trains upgrades SDH network with Ciena platform

News

6500 packet-optical platform will help improve public services across its transportation system and ensure trains operate at safe distances

Sydney Trains is upgrading its SDH network with Ciena's 6500 packet-optical platform. The aim is to improve public services across its transportation system with a faster, low latency and reliable data network. The deployment will also support passenger safety measures that ensure trains operate at safe distances.

Sydney Trains operates trains in the greater Sydney, Australia, suburban area. Sydney Trains also operates and maintains the metropolitan rail network and provides maintenance services to New South Wales Trains.

The train operator has various sites along its network that have different traffic requirements. Ciena's packet-optical platform will support these end-to-end services and various system configurations, including deployments over long distances and fibre types such as aerial.

"For transportation providers, migrating their communication networks by deploying Packet-optical technologies is key to continually improving safety measures and optimising passenger services. Ciena offers converged packet optical solutions that serve as the foundation for public transport agencies to meet current needs, while enabling them to invest in the infrastructure to deploy future services, " said Anthony McLachlan, VP and general manager, Asia Pacific, Ciena.
