Ghent University receives ERC Grant for Hot Photonics Project

Researcher Wim Bogaerts receives the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council, worth around 2 million euros.
Wim Bogaerts (Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture) secures an ERC grant to lead the Hot Photonics project. The project explores a new type of programmable optical chip that can be used for data communication applications and sensors, but also for optical calculations such as encryption of secure fibre optic connections.
The European Research Council (ERC) is part of the European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020, and permits young researchers to conduct research over five years. In total, there are currently 52 ERC scholarships at Ghent University.
